NZ Post Christmas cut-off dates 2026 for online stores

NZ Post's recommended sending dates for Christmas 2026 within New Zealand are Friday 18 December for Courier Economy and Tuesday 22 December for Courier (overnight). Express and Express Tonight run to Thursday 24 December, and domestic mail closes on Thursday 17 December. Rural deliveries can take up to 3 extra working days. Sending to Australia, the dates are earlier: from Friday 4 December for Economy to regional NT, SA and Tasmania, to Friday 18 December for Express to metro Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Your store's own 'order by' date is earlier still, because you need time to pack. Below are the dates, how to set your order-by dates and what to tell customers.

Good to know about the NZ dates

  • Express Tonight only runs in and between Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch, aiming for same-day evening delivery (6pm to 9pm, Monday to Friday).
  • For rural addresses, or parcels containing dangerous goods, NZ Post says to allow up to 3 extra working days.
  • NZ Post pays no compensation for late parcels, so a missed cut-off is a customer-service problem, not a claim. See what to do when a parcel is lost or late.
  • Using another courier, such as Aramex or NZ Couriers? Check their own Christmas dates; they differ from NZ Post.

Sending to Australia

Your item needs to be in NZ Post's network by these dates to target delivery before Christmas Day. Remote addresses need more time.

How to set your store's 'order by' dates

  1. Find NZ Post's date for the service you use most, for example Courier Economy (Fri 18 Dec) or Courier overnight (Tue 22 Dec).
  2. Subtract your packing time. If you ship the next working day, a send-by date of Fri 18 Dec means customers must order by Thu 17 Dec.
  3. Allow extra for rural customers and for your own busiest days. Many shops add a day of buffer in the last week.
  4. Keep the message simple: one date for most of New Zealand, an earlier one for rural addresses, and separate dates for Australia.
  5. Offer a faster option, like Courier overnight, with its own order-by date so late shoppers can still buy.

Tell customers before they ask

  • Add a banner to your site: 'Order by [date] for Christmas delivery (rural: [date]; Australia: [date])'.
  • Put the dates on product pages, your shipping policy and your FAQ.
  • Add them to your Instagram, Messenger and email auto replies (see our Christmas out of office message examples).
  • Email your list a week before the cut-off and again two days before.
  • After the cut-off, say clearly that new orders may arrive after Christmas, and suggest gift cards.

The 'will it arrive by Christmas?' rush

From late November, 'will it get here in time?' and 'where is my order?' messages pile up in comments under your ads, DMs and email, often right when you're busiest packing. Clear dates on your site cut most of them. For the rest, Paperflower puts every comment, DM and email in one list, puts buying questions first and drafts each reply from your shipping policy and the customer's Shopify order, so answers are right and fast. See our guides to WISMO, shipping policy templates and Australia Post's Christmas dates if you also ship from Australia.

How Paperflower is different

Comments are a sales channel, not a chore

Most tools treat comments as noise. Paperflower reads every one, spots buying questions like “do you ship to NZ?” and makes sure they get answered before the customer moves on.

Buying Intent and Opportunity Score

Every conversation gets a score so the people ready to buy come first. You see who to reply to now, and who can wait.

Shopify context in every draft

Order status, shipping and product details are pulled in automatically, so drafts are right the first time and private order details never go out in public.

You stay in control

AI drafts are on and auto-send is off by default. Complaints are escalated to you. Refunds and cancellations always need a human.

Simple pricing

Paperflower starts free with 100 customer interactions a month, no card needed: every message in one list, and you write the replies. AI sorting, reply drafts and spam hiding come with Standard, which is A$47 a month for 3,000 customer interactions, with a 7-day free trial. Human replies are always free. See all plans.

Frequently asked questions

Within New Zealand, NZ Post recommends sending by Friday 18 December for Courier Economy, Tuesday 22 December for Courier (overnight) and Thursday 24 December for Express. Domestic mail closes on Thursday 17 December.

It depends on the service and where in Australia. Express to metro Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne is Friday 18 December; Courier to those cities is Wednesday 16 December; Economy ranges from Friday 11 December (metro east coast) to Friday 4 December (regional NT, SA and Tasmania).

Take NZ Post's date for your main service and subtract your packing time, plus a day of buffer. For Courier Economy (Fri 18 Dec) with next-working-day dispatch, ask customers to order by Wed 16 or Thu 17 Dec.

Allow longer. NZ Post says rural deliveries, and parcels containing dangerous goods, can take up to 3 extra working days.

Not unless you turn that on. By default it drafts a reply and you approve it. You can switch on auto-send for simple, safe questions once you trust the drafts.

Instagram, Facebook and TikTok comments and DMs, support email through Gmail or Google Workspace, and Shopify for order details.

Yes. The Free plan is the basics: 100 customer interactions a month in one list, no card needed, and you write each reply. Standard adds AI sorting, reply drafts and spam hiding, and comes with a 7-day free trial. You can cancel any time. Compare plans.
