Delete
Scams, fake giveaway links, slurs and anything that shares a customer's private details. Gone for everyone.
To delete a comment on Instagram, open the comments on your post, press and hold the comment (or swipe left on iPhone) and tap Delete. On your own posts you can delete anyone's comment; on other people's posts you can only delete your own. If you would rather not delete, you can hide a comment, restrict the person so only they see their comments, limit comments from accounts that don't follow you, or turn comments off. Below are the steps for each, what Restrict actually does, and which one a brand should use when.
Updated 19 October 2026
You can delete any comment on your own posts, and your own comments anywhere. You cannot delete someone else's comment on someone else's post; you can only report it. If you delete your comment on a Reel that was also shared to Facebook, it is removed from both apps.
Restrict is a quiet way to deal with someone without blocking them. They are not told, and they can still see and like your posts. It is useful for a troll or a serial complainer you do not want to provoke by blocking.
Limits are for a wave of unwanted comments, for example when a post goes viral or a giveaway attracts bots. They hide new comments and chats from whole groups of accounts, without those people knowing.
Scams, fake giveaway links, slurs and anything that shares a customer's private details. Gone for everyone.
Spam and bots you want out of sight without a fuss. You can still read it and unhide it later.
One person who keeps posting negative comments. They do not know, and you choose what others see.
A sudden wave of comments from strangers. Turn it on for a few days, not for weeks.
Rarely the right choice for a shop. Comments are where people ask price, sizing and shipping questions, and a busy, answered comment section is social proof.
A real customer complaint. Deleting it looks like hiding something; a calm, helpful reply in public, then moving details to DMs, wins trust. See how to reply to Instagram comments.
Ads are where most of the spam and most of the buying questions end up, and their comments do not always appear in your normal notifications. You can hide or delete ad comments from the post itself or from Meta Business Suite's inbox. Turning ad comments off is not simple and throws away the social proof, so most shops hide spam, add Hidden Words and answer the rest quickly. For a full spam plan, see how to stop spam comments on Instagram.
The hard part for a busy shop is not knowing where the delete button is; it is finding the scam comment under last week's ad before a customer falls for it, while answering the 'do you ship to NZ?' comment before that buyer moves on. Paperflower reads every comment on your Instagram and Facebook posts and ads, hides spam and scam comments automatically on paid plans (you can switch that off and review what was hidden), and puts buying questions at the top with a reply ready. Paperflower never posts public replies for you: press Send and it copies the reply and opens the comment so you paste and post it yourself. See how comments work.
Most tools treat comments as noise. Paperflower reads every one, spots buying questions like “do you ship to NZ?” and makes sure they get answered before the customer moves on.
Every conversation gets a score so the people ready to buy come first. You see who to reply to now, and who can wait.
Order status, shipping and product details are pulled in automatically, so drafts are right the first time and private order details never go out in public.
AI drafts are on and auto-send is off by default. Complaints are escalated to you. Refunds and cancellations always need a human.
Paperflower starts free with 100 customer interactions a month, no card needed: every message in one list, and you write the replies. AI sorting, reply drafts and spam hiding come with Standard, which is A$47 a month for 3,000 customer interactions, with a 7-day free trial. Human replies are always free. See all plans.
Local time zones, local shipping questions, and support from people who know the market.
Yes, if it is on your own post: press and hold the comment and tap Delete. On someone else's post you can only delete comments you wrote yourself; for anything else, report it.
Instagram does not notify them. With a hidden comment, they can still see it themselves but others cannot, and they are not told it was hidden.
Restrict is quiet: the person can still see your posts, but their new comments are only visible to them unless you approve them, and their messages go to requests. Blocking stops them seeing your profile and contacting you at all. Neither sends them a notification.
Usually because it is on someone else's post and was written by someone else; only the post owner can remove it. Otherwise, update the app and try again, or try on instagram.com from a computer.
Go to your profile, open the menu, then Your activity, Interactions and Comments. Tap Select, choose the comments and tap Delete.
Usually not. Comments under posts and ads are where shoppers ask buying questions. Hide spam, use Hidden Words and Restrict for repeat offenders, and keep answering real questions.
Not unless you turn that on. By default it drafts a reply and you approve it. You can switch on auto-send for simple, safe questions once you trust the drafts.
Instagram, Facebook and TikTok comments and DMs, support email through Gmail or Google Workspace, and Shopify for order details.
Yes. The Free plan is the basics: 100 customer interactions a month in one list, no card needed, and you write each reply. Standard adds AI sorting, reply drafts and spam hiding, and comes with a 7-day free trial. You can cancel any time. Compare plans.
Connect Instagram, Facebook, email and Shopify in a few minutes. On Standard, AI sorts every message and drafts every reply, you stay in control, and nothing is sent without your say-so unless you switch that on. Free puts every message in one list for you to answer.
