How to turn off comments on Facebook posts, Pages and ads

To limit comments on one Facebook post, tap the three dots on the post, choose 'Who can comment on your post?' and pick who can comment. For all your public posts, go to Settings and privacy, then Settings, then Followers and public content, and change who can comment. Facebook ads are different: there is no switch to turn ad comments off, so brands hide comments, filter words and reply to the rest. Below are the steps for posts, profiles, groups, Pages and ads.

Turn off comments on one Facebook post

  1. Find the post on your profile or Page.
  2. Tap the three dots in the top corner of the post.
  3. Tap 'Who can comment on your post?'.
  4. Choose Public, Friends, or Profiles and Pages you mention. The last option is the closest to switching comments off, because only people you tag in the post can comment.

Limit comments on all your public posts

  1. Open the menu and go to Settings and privacy, then Settings.
  2. Under Audience and visibility, open Followers and public content.
  3. Find 'Who can comment on your public posts?' and choose Public, Friends of friends, or Friends.

Turn off comments in a Facebook group

Group admins and moderators can switch commenting off on any post in the group: tap the three dots on the post and choose Turn off commenting. Existing comments stay, but no one can add new ones until you turn it back on.

Can you turn off comments on Facebook ads?

No. Facebook does not have a switch that turns comments off on an ad. What you can do instead:

Hide or delete single comments

Open the ad's comments (in Meta Business Suite's inbox, or from the ad preview in Ads Manager), tap the three dots on a comment and choose Hide or Delete.

Block words automatically

In your Page's moderation settings, add words you never want shown, such as scam links or competitor names, and turn on the profanity filter. Matching comments are hidden for you.

Use Moderation Assist

In your Page's professional dashboard, Moderation Assist can hide comments that match rules you set, for example comments with links or from accounts with no profile picture.

Instagram placements

If the ad also runs on Instagram from an existing Instagram post, you can turn off commenting on that post in the Instagram app. Ads made only in Ads Manager follow the Facebook rules above.

Hide, delete or reply: what a brand should do

  • Hide spam, scams and abuse. Hiding is quiet: the person who wrote it still sees it, so it does not start an argument.
  • Delete only what breaks the law or your rules, like hate speech or someone's private details.
  • Never hide a genuine complaint. Reply calmly and move the details to Messenger. Other shoppers judge you by how you handle it.
  • Answer buying questions fast. 'Do you ship to NZ?' and 'what sizes?' under an ad are people about to buy, and they scroll on if no one answers.
  • Do not automate public replies. Meta has been restricting accounts that post automated comment replies.

Where to see comments on your Facebook ads

Ad comments do not always show in your normal notifications. In Meta Business Suite open Inbox and look at Facebook comments and Instagram comments, which include ad comments. In Ads Manager you can also open an ad's preview and choose the Facebook post with comments.

Paperflower brings every Facebook and Instagram comment, including ad comments, into one list with your DMs and support email, puts the buying questions at the top, hides obvious spam on paid plans, and drafts a reply for each. For public comments it copies the reply and opens the comment so you paste and post it yourself; it never posts public replies for you. See how comments work.

How Paperflower is different

Comments are a sales channel, not a chore

Most tools treat comments as noise. Paperflower reads every one, spots buying questions like “do you ship to NZ?” and makes sure they get answered before the customer moves on.

Buying Intent and Opportunity Score

Every conversation gets a score so the people ready to buy come first. You see who to reply to now, and who can wait.

Shopify context in every draft

Order status, shipping and product details are pulled in automatically, so drafts are right the first time and private order details never go out in public.

You stay in control

AI drafts are on and auto-send is off by default. Complaints are escalated to you. Refunds and cancellations always need a human.

Simple pricing

Paperflower starts free with 100 customer interactions a month, no card needed: every message in one list, and you write the replies. AI sorting, reply drafts and spam hiding come with Standard, which is A$47 a month for 3,000 customer interactions, with a 7-day free trial. Human replies are always free. See all plans.

Built for AU and NZ brands

Local time zones, local shipping questions, and support from people who know the market.

Frequently asked questions

Tap the three dots on the post, choose 'Who can comment on your post?' and pick Profiles and Pages you mention. Only people you tag can then comment. In groups, admins can choose Turn off commenting.

No. There is no switch for ad comments. You can hide or delete individual comments, block words with your Page's moderation tools, and use Moderation Assist to hide comments that match your rules.

The comment disappears for everyone except the person who wrote it and their friends. They are not told it was hidden. You can unhide it at any time.

Usually not. Ad comments are full of buying questions, and comments help an ad look trusted. Filter the spam and answer the rest quickly instead.

Not unless you turn that on. By default it drafts a reply and you approve it. You can switch on auto-send for simple, safe questions once you trust the drafts.

Instagram, Facebook and TikTok comments and DMs, support email through Gmail or Google Workspace, and Shopify for order details.

Yes. The Free plan is the basics: 100 customer interactions a month in one list, no card needed, and you write each reply. Standard adds AI sorting, reply drafts and spam hiding, and comes with a 7-day free trial. You can cancel any time. Compare plans.
